What depicting the ordeal of a Muslim family trying to reclaim their honour in Mulk, Taapsee Pannu and director Anubhav Sinha are back with another hard-hitting tale in Thappad.
The film's trailer shows Amu (Taapsee), seeking a divorce after her husband (Pavail Gulati) slaps her in front of everyone at a party. The people around her consider the issue trivial, asking Amu to forgive her husband. Amu, however, fights back.
In a particular scene, a character is heard reiterating what we heard Kabir Singh director, Sandeep Reddy Vanga say during an interview last year about 'love' and 'a few slaps'. Reddy's controversial comment was criticised widely for normalising violence against women in the name of love.
In an interview with Film Companion, Vanga had said "When you are deeply connected with a woman or vice versa, there is a lot of honesty in it. If you don't have that physical demonstration of...if you don't have that liberty of slapping each other, then I don't see anything there."
In sharp contrast, Taapsee's film Thappad shows that it is never okay to hit a woman. Not even once. And it is certainly not okay to expect the woman to be tolerant of this kind of behaviour, adjust around it and in the name of moving on, brush it under the carpet without addressing it.
The full trailer of Thappad will be out tomorrow.
Earlier today, Taapsee's first look poster from the film was unveiled.
Sharing the poster, the actress had written "Kya yeh bas itni si baat hai Kya pyaar mein ye bhi jayaz hai Yeh #Thappad Ki pehli Jhalak hai! #Thappadfirstlook."
